BOOK FACILIATION
How might we create certain experiences to have an extraordinary impact?
BACKGROUND
This project was a part of my course MFA Design for Social Innovation at SVA. In this course, we explored ways to harness recently-available communications technologies to spark behavioral and cultural change. With my team, we designed a creative reflection and facilitated discussions for our cohort of social designers on the book 'The Power of Moments' by Chip Heath and Dan Heath.

LOCATION
Many of the defining moments in our lives are the result of accident or luck—but why would we leave our most meaningful, memorable moments to chance when we can create them? The Power of Moments gives us a framework and real-life examples of how to be the author of richer experiences.
As a part of this project at DSI, I explored the ideas to do an activity that makes an individual reflect on their own actions and feelings from everyday moments of life and work.
CONCEPT
While human lives are endlessly variable, our moments are not created equal. After communicating the framework from the book to the group on how to be a designer of moments. I took this opportunity to create an experience. In the small groups of two, I gave them a zine with 8 simple questions which made them reflect on their actions in life and work which they can share with each other. The activity ends with discussions, feedback, laughter and sweets.

Defining moments capture us at our best — moments of achievement, moments of courage.

Defining moments are social: weddings, graduations, baptisms, vacations, work triumphs, speeches, sporting events.

SAD! MAD? GLAD:
I illustrated a zine with 6 questions to reflect upon different emotional life moments for the activity.

LEARNINGS
-
Never confuse facilitation with training. Facilitator helps the participants learn from their own experiences and shared information.
-
Planning the session in advance helps to keep the sense of timing and run the facilitation smoothly.
-
Sensing how people are feeling and understanding how to respond to a particular situation is a critical skill of facilitation.
