THE MISSING INGREDIENT

Creating opportunities with a local nonprofit using communication design and ABCD method approach to build community to support underserved children in Bronx

OVERVIEW

For my 15-month long Master's thesis project at SVA, I worked with a team of nutritionists and community members with one of the NYC’s largest food pantry called NY Common Pantry to support their work to address food insecurity in South Bronx. Using communication design and ABCD (Asset Based Community Development) Approach, I worked with the team to tackle these complex challenges in the peek of pandemic through neighborhood collaborations to build health equity for high need individuals and families in New York City.

CHALLENGE

How might we address both the collective challenges that participants are facing in addition to the strengthening the program through community collaboration to continue learning and leading in healthy choices for the community?

SOLUTION

We discovered the lack of awareness about the program in the neighborhood and gaps of in effective communication with the community by the pantry. Based on our findings, we concluded on building digital toolkits, bringing the community online and strategy to collaborate with neighborhood organization to expand the reach.

“I am really looking forward to continuing to allow this group to grow, folding in physical activity and continued group learning for future program iterations. The attention to detail and addressing the specific needs of the community for continuing to improve healthy behaviors is both new to our program offerings but also approachable with its human centered design model”
